Tributes

On March 28, 2023, we lost, a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, Aunt, cousin, and friend, Gaye Mackey – Spears. The trumpets blew from Heaven as the angels mounted her wings and ushered her to a peaceful resting place. Although this day saddens our hearts, we know that she has won her Christian race and is in a better place. Born on August 9, 1959, to Levi and Ruth Mackey of Hobbs, New Mexico. Gaye was the eldest of seven siblings. Those who knew her loved her, and we are forever grateful for the time we spent with her. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Mackey, and sister Michelle Mackey-Adams. Gaye was a woman of God and had unwavering faith as it grew stronger with each life challenge. It was seeing her fight with dignity that helped to ground and support our family as she struggled through her medical crises. She was baptized at an early age by Minister Charles Anderson of Hobbs, New Mexico. She was a member of Greenville Avenue Church of Christ under the direction of Shelton Gibbs where she remained faithful until her death. She was also a devoted member of Minda Street Church of Christ under the direction of Dr. Tony Roach for many years. Gaye had a successful career as a medical coder for many years in various medical industries and until her death. She had a love for traveling, cooking, and spending time with her family, particularly, attending both of her grandson's basketball games. She graduated from Hobbs High School and attended Abilene Christian University. Gaye’s passion was her family, and her greatest joy was becoming a grandmother. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 25 years, Andre Spears; her one and only son, Bennie Rashad Matthews IV (Kimberly) and three grandchildren, which were her pride and joy, Elijah, Isaiah, and Serenity; six siblings, two sisters Valerie Body (Robert), and Yolanda Smith; three brothers, Tony Mackey (Monica), Sean Mackey (Starlet), Levi Todd Mackey and six stepchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends whom she loved dearly. We will forever hold in our hearts the beautiful memories shared with our beloved Gaye. By the Lord’s grace, on March 19, 2023, Gaye and Andre celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary one last time. Visitation will be held 6:00PM-8:00PM, Thursday, April 6, 2023 at Slay Memorial Chapel in Aubrey, TX. A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM, Friday, April 7, 2023 at Greenville Avenue Church of Christ in Richardson, TX. Interment will be at 1:30PM at Sparkman-Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Dallas, TX. On-line condolences may be shared at www.slaymemorialfuneralhome.com.
